GAME INTRODUCTION

Backpack Battles is a groundbreaking auto battler game that redefines the strategy genre by centering on inventory management, offering a unique blend of tactical decision-making and creative item combination. Developed by the indie studio Play with Furcifer and published by Indie Ark and Shochiku (Japan), this game has rapidly gained global popularity since its early access release, selling over one million copies worldwide during its early access phase alone.

At the core of Backpack Battles lies a innovative gameplay loop that combines inventory management with asynchronous PvP battles. Whereas most auto battlers centre on boosting characters, or cards to place down your board with these little warriors entered into battle before (and after) the match against a fellow player takes place, this game puts your backpack front and center of competition. For the unaware: Players assume the role of adventurers, tasked with collecting a strong inventory and placing them in their backpack strategically to fight others. Each match is up to 18 rounds, separated into two phases: the shop phase and the battle phase.

During the shop phase, players spend gold they earn each round on items to help in future rounds while increasing their backpack size or re-rolling the store for better choices. It has more than 400 items that can be divided into weapons, potions, artifacts and companions—each of them with its own rarity from common to legendary—which will help you gain additional capabilities as well. One of the standout elements is the item synergy system: items on adjacent tiles provide stronger effects. I mean, a pan will hit harder when it's next to food items; whereas a dark-themed doll grows stronger the faster it is near something "dark"-classed adding game puzzle strategy.

The battle phase is completely automatic, requiring no manual input from you at all. Items triggers at set intervals related to their properties and what they're placed next too inflicting damage, armor or healing/heal debuffs on enemies. Your goal is to reduce your enemy player Health down to zero, and strategic item placement becomes more important than just pure rarity; even common items can take out Legendary ones if placed in an advantageous position.

Backpack Battles consists of 6 individual classes, with each class containing 5 sub-classes in addition to mechanics that cater themselves towards specific playstyles to maximize replayability. The Mage, added in the 1.0 version, uses elemental scrolls and a "wizard chess" system, while the Adventurer can use all classes’ items and combine neutral items with "twine". Other classes like the Berserker and Ranger cater to players who prefer brute force or ranged attacks, respectively.

Three game modes are available for players, such as unranked matches (for casual games), ranked matches (for competitive gameplay) and custom lobbies(where you can play with your friends or even create a tournament light. Cross-platform play on Windows, Linux and Steam Deck (with full controller support) with cloud sync is also supported; the game can be played now- or later. Currently sitting at a "very positive" rating on Steam with over 20,000 reviews and a solid player score of 91/100 thanks to its deep strategy that contains some addictive gameplay - although players do mention an occasional meta saturation or RNG frustrations.

And no less that Backpack Battles arrives an indie gem, with mechanics so simple yet most effective showing at the same time a true amount of strategy depth. For its emphasis on tactical plays instead of pay-to-win mechanics, and for enabling casual and hardcore players alike, it helped this auto battler genre have a must-have title.
